Matt Wright is one of a new breed of parliamentary candidates in the UK that were selected by a new, more accountable process, called an Open Primary. This process, now being recommended as best practice, allowed the general public in the Vale of Clwyd, not just party members, to pick the Conservative candidate that would fight a General Election.

About Matt Wright - I was born in 1962, live at Nannerch and have a background in engineering and manufacturing industry. I started my career at the TI Group, working my way through R&D to lead their industrial design function at New World Ltd. I then went into consultancy and joined Enterprise Plc, a leading economic development agency, where I later became a Director of the Business Solutions division. I then went on to advise businesses as a senior consultant on contract from Qinetiq, a major R&D company, to the North West Development Agency. I had 21 years of solid industry experience, mostly at management level, before I became seriously involved in politics. Perhaps thats quite rare nowadays but I'm proud of it!
Through this work I have been closely involved over many years in economic development and I am a strong believer in putting something back into the society in which we live and that is why I became a councillor. I live with my wife Sue who works in training for a local authority. We are both members of Friends of Theatr Clwyd Cymru and the Friends of the Scala. We enjoy walking our dogs, Rusty and Megan and eating out in local pubs in Flintshire and Denbighshire.
I am a former Chairman of the Conservative Party in North Wales. On Flintshire County Council I am the Deputy Leader of the Conservative Group and I chair the Environment & Regeneration Scrutiny Committee. I am also a member of the Education Scrutiny Committee and a former member of the People and Performance committee, the Scrutiny Co-ordinating Committee and the Licensing Committee. I also chair two quarry liaison groups and chair Brynford Village Hall Committee. I am a Governor of Ysgol Brynffordd and take a keen interest in science and technology issues.
I stood in the Welsh Assembly elections in Alyn & Deeside in 2003 where I achieved a large 6 point swing to the Conservatives and then in the Vale of Clwyd in 2007 where I gained a 7.4% swing, the biggest swing from Labour to Conservative in North Wales.
