Central site for prison needed in north Wales

Commenting on the delays and confusion over the north Wales prison site, Matt Wright said,

"There is a need for a prison in North Wales. It is well proven that prisoners are more readily reformed when they are able to maintain contacts with their families. At present they are being farmed around neighbouring regions without proper access to the Welsh language.

"A suitable site should have been established long ago and work commenced. The government appears to be in a shambles over this.

"If they can't use the preferred site they need to look again at sites that were previously offered, preferably at a mid-point in North Wales in an acceptable location with access to the A55.

"Any spin-off benefits to the local economy should be sought especially in areas that have been hit by factory closures and job losses. Local authorities such as Denbighshire County Council, who have previoulsy offered a site, need to be closely involved."
